The Windshield

The most common incident in Iceland, rental car or not, is a cracked windshield. While the damage itself is harmless, it can easily startle a driver when a rock hits the windshield. Additionally the crack can cause inconvenience during your trip. Our advice, keep a safe distance from the car in front of you at all times.

• Keep a safe distance from the car in front of you.
• Increase the distance when driving on gravel roads.
• Reduce speed while driving on loose gravel.

Road work on Icelandic highways is the main reason for cracked windshields. Once a road is fixed, loose gravel is laid on the tarmac afterwards for cars to further bind the tarmac (Don’t ask why..). A side note, we reccommend reducing your speed significantly when entering loose gravel as the car can easily start to slip.

Lastly, replacing a windshield is a costly process. The renter is responsible for the windshield with a deductible of ISK 30.000 unless you opt for the Liabiltiy Waiver.
